My wife and I could be said on most matters to have a lot of time for each other. However, at the moment, this does not extend to our time allocation in listening to the Morning Ireland News programme on RTE I each day. I feel that we should set the alarm for ten minutes to eight, get a quick resume of the business news, weather forecast, news headlines and 'what it says in the papers' before reverting to Lyric Fm for some mild seductive musical fare before facing into the chill winds of our current economic climate. However my wife, using argumentative strategies honed in her public sector work environment, feels that we should adhere to a previous 'benchmark' agreement where we used to listen until 9 o'clock and on weekends extend this to include panel discussions on Today FM. In fact, in this respect, she is adamant that we should have the 'Very Last Word' on weekends. I have countered by stating that most profound, in depth analysis in recent times has encompassed discussions on such riveting topics such as 'why the Gardai may not use use their mobile phones or sharpen their own pencils at home' in response to a perceived government slight or 'how the public sector in general has found ever more sophisticated methods for going slower and slower at work ' so that, to all intents and purposes, they will soon be stationary. I fail to see how the protracted discussions on such topics lend any modicum of illumination to the dark economic mists presently covering our bleak island. Thus, like many a similar difficult and strongly contested dispute in recent times, we have reached a total impasse and have reluctantly referred the matter to the LRC (Love Relations Board?) in Dublin for final arbitration. Pending the final decision being handed down in time on this matter after full consultation with all parties, my wife has ordained that we revert to listening to a full hour of Morning Ireland which itself is news to me!
